Representation of Jay-Z, Lady Gaga & Dave Grohl

The representation of Jay-Z is that he is taking a defensive stance, he is bolding holding his hands in his pockets and is holding his head up high and turned slightly, the way he is standing is like he is protecting the other 2 artists- indicating not to mess with him or there will be trouble.
A theme that is common in the colours for this magazine is the colour black- black is the colour of mystery and to a small degree they all look mysterious. Jay-Z is looking down on us and has his face turned away, Dave Grohl has his hair long and hiding his face- like we shouldn’t see his true nature.
And Lady Gaga has a hat on which is shadowing her facial features, obscuring our view of her- we will never get to see the really Lady Gaga.
The shot is a long shot so we get a good look of their stance and what their facial expressions are.
Representation of Biffy Clyro

In this image, Biffy Clyro look quite mysterious and they’re playing the ‘great thinker’.
In this image the 2 band members in the back are wearing black/dark coloured clothes, whereas the lead is wearing a white hoodie type thing.
Because he looks different from the rest of the band members, it makes him stand out more, and the connotations of the colour white are; innocence, purity, religion etc. They could be making him out to be some sort of deity, hence why he has his hood up, he is trying to hide away his true self.
All of the band members are giving the audience a direct mode of address to connect with the audience, but the look the lead singer is giving is almost like he is judging you; he’s got his hand to his lips, so he is in control over us because he is thinking about what to do next.
This is a medium shot to give us a good look of the tops of their shoulders and their facial expressions.

Representation of You Me At Six

The representation of You Me at Six is that they look quite happy/excited you can tell this because of their cheery expressions on their faces.
Their costumes in this picture are mainly black/dark they could be dressed like this to go with the mysterious look or they could be following along with the ‘goth/emo’ stereotype that is typically associated with a Kerrang reader. But they contrast this ‘emo’ look with the fact they look lively in their expressions, a typical Goth is usually quite sombre and macabre- but You Me at Six are breaking away from stereotypes and being original
In the image they are giving the audience a direct mode of address and look straight at us.
The lead singer of the group is the one who looks the most happiest- this could be because he is the lead singer and he is proud of his position, whereas the rest of his bandmates have either a look of content or surprise…which shows that they love what they are doing and they’re coping with fame etc, well.
Their hair in this image, is the typical ‘rocker’ hairstyle, swaying fringe, lots of layers etc. They have their hair like this because Kerrang! Magazine is  rock magazine and they fit in with the genre of the magazine.

Representation of Eminem

The representation of Eminem in this image is that he looks stern and fearless.
His costume in this image is that he is wearing a black vest top- a connotation of the colour black is mystery. Eminem look mysterious in this image because we do not know that much about him.
The facial expression he is pulling, is a stern one he does not look happy but it’s not an angry look its more of a…’this is who I am’  type look. He is giving a direct mode of address to the audience and his eye contact is like he is look straight at the audience and questioning them as if to say ‘
I’ve been to hell and back and come back fighting, what have you done?’I say this as well because he is wearing that vest top to show off his tattoos that he has across his arms- to display that he is proud of his past.
He has his arms folded tightly across his chest in an aggressive stance towards the audience to show that he is a tough man.

Representation of Lily Allen

The representation of Lily Allen in this picture is that she looks dangerous and fearless.
Her costume is nothing more than just a skirt, black leggings and high heels- she is topless in the picture but she has her back turned towards us, this is to show that although she is daring and fearless she can also be abit shy and timid. She is looking towards the camera but her eyes are sort of looking down and also her face is mainly hidden by her fringe on her head- in the image she has 2 panthers beside her, one of the panthers is letting out a huge roar and the other is slowly walking out. This is to represent the 2 sides of Lily Allen- She is a fighter but she also can get scared and acts timid.
Her facial expression is that she is looking towards us in a sexual way to entice us, but she is sort of telling us to be gentle with her. She will either become really shy or become a fighter.
Her hair is long and is flowing down her back, this is to cover herself up more because she feels exposed- she feels that people will know the real her and so she covers that up as much as possible.

Conventions of a Music Magazine-

Recognisable Masthead- ‘NME’ is mainly hidden by the main image which shows that it is not as important.
The picture is layered over the picture, it has more importance and looks better when on top.
Colour- The main colours on this page are black white and red.
The connotations of the colour black are ‘mystery’
Main Image-Direct mode of address to directly communicate with the audience, the layout of this is that is in the central, the image is the first thing that the customer notices so it has to be noticeable.
Main Coverline. Is in the centre of the main image to make it more noticeable, and it gives a clue as to what is inside the magazine.
Coverlines- Are on the left side of the page of the page and what the coverlines say, attract attention to the audience. They have a play on words of ‘The Killers sink their teeth in’ this makes it seem more hard hitting and edgy and abit humorous. They have quotations from the artists in one colour and the sentence relating to the article in a different colour this is to distinguish between the two.
Barcode and price and webpage.

Representation of Leona Lewis

In this image she is looking directly into the camera- a direct mode of address, and she has her mouth slightly open with her hand to her mouth- she is trying to entice us in towards her because she a confident and sexy woman and she is flaunting this towards us.
She is leaning slightly which is defining her feminine curves- this is again flaunting her confidence within herself towards.
She is wearing a small black dress with grey leggings, this contrasts her fair make up but blends in with her flawless skin- she is wearing leggings with the dress other than nothing at all- to maintain her dignity. She knows she is a sexy woman but she doesn’t want to give too much away at once, so the over all look makes her more dominant. She knows she is sexy but she is in control.
Her hair as beautiful golden curls hanging above her shoulders, this makes her look more feminine and just heightens her confidence.
The shot itself is a medium long shot this gives us as the audience a good look at her body posture and her facial expression.

This magazine cover follows the main conventions of a magazine front cover for a school/college magazine, it has a main image which again, is giving a direct mode of address to my audience. I stuck with the same tag line at the top of my magazine to make it easily recognisable to m audience, I also kept one of my coverline consistant as well, 'Read you opinion! Real Students! Real Life' this is to make the magazine more recognisable and they will have the motivation to read what is inside the magazine. I used more incentives to make the magazine more appealing in the this issue, I made some things in bold to make the more eye popping to the audience. And again I stuck with the same colours because I was going with a 'winter' theme so I kept the colours of- white and blue mainly- the connotations of these colours are winter and cold. This is why I featured an article on how to beat the winter blues this year and stay cheery- this will appeal to my audience because they would've been feeling the cold weather and will want to know how to improve on how they are feeling.
If I was going to do this again I would've manipulated the image abit more and editted it so you could see less of the background and more of the person.
And I would've made the coverlines even bolder to make them stand out more.

1st Magazine Cover

This magazine cover follows the typical conventions of a school/college magazine cover. I chose the title 'Sponne Shout!' because it was a title that my survey found to be the best one and so I stuck with it. The main image I used is a medium close up and the mise en scene of the image, is inside a school and she looks like a student, because she is in a school environment and she is holding onto some books so she looks sophisticated and eager to learn. In the image she is also giving a direct mode of address to make the audience more enticed into what she is doing. I have coverlines on the left and right side of the magazine cover and I chose the colours white and blue for the font colours, because those colours are quite neutral with the main image on the page. So I thought it went quite well with it. Although it's not very clear on this image but I included an issue date and price at the top of the page. To make the cover look more 'busy and crowded' to make it look like it had more inside it, I included a smaller image at the bottom of the page and in the picture they are 'jumping' and so I thought it'd be a nice chance to have the pun of 'jump for success'  including abit of light hearted humour relaxes the audience abit more. I included a website address at the bottom of the cover so if the audience want to contact us to find out more about the magazine...they can. I created a tag line at the top so they would read it and think that it really was the best magazine in the county.
I created a few incentives to make the magazine more appealing and to make people buy my magazine.
This magazine cover follows the typical conventions of a magazine front cover, it has a main image- where she is giving a direct mode of address and it is a medium shot, so we can see her facial expressions clearly and what she is wearing. For the font colours I decided to stick with the 'winter' theme I had going on...I kept with the colours of white and blue because the connotations of those colours are winter. I stuck with the same tagline for each of my magazine to keep with consistancy.I also had the same cover line on the front of my magazines 'Read your opinion! Real Students! Real Life!' I stuck with this because then my audience will recognise my magazine and will know which one it is. I also included some incentives on my magazine cover to entice my readers and to make them want to find out more about my magazine. I also included a barcode and a small website address so then my audience could find out more about my magazine if they wanted to. If I was going to improve upon this magazine cover I would have manipulated the image abit more to make it more wintery and to make the image look more professional.
